My Dearest, Darling Donder
A letter on your first birthday at the Rainbow Bridge
Today is your day.
I can’t touch you anymore, but somehow you’re still here. Like glitter, I catch glimpses of you when I least expect it.
When I picture you lying in your chair, or standing by the couch, (not so) patiently waiting for someone to help you. In the garden, in the grasses, which I eventually gave up trying to keep you out of, or under your favorite tree.
You will always belong with us.
Sometimes I smile, grateful for all the beautiful adventures we shared. And sometimes I cry, because I can’t share them with you anymore and because I miss you so much.
My sweetest “seventies flower child.”
That’s what I called you for the way you moved through the world as if everything was new and full of wonder.
I imagine it’s the same for you there, with so much to explore, so many adventures, still seeing everything with that same sense of wonder.
And when we meet again, you’ll show me all of it.
Happy birthday at the Rainbow Bridge, sweetheart.
With love,
Mom
