Tea

a Tiny Kingdom poem about a moment that matters more than everything else

The tea is cooling.

Dingus on my left,
my little man,
all bravado forgotten,
dozing now in a strip of sunlight
that falls through the window.

Guusje on my right,
on her back,
my finger loosely in her mouth.

My mind is with the laundry,
the evening meal,
the things that still need doing.

Then she looks at me.
Her gaze steady yet soft,
full of trust.

My little girl,
still so young.
I would move mountains for her.

Blissfully, she suckles my finger.

I feel safe with you, she says.

My heart overflows.

Everything can wait.
This cannot.
