The Grief That Love Carries
a Tiny Kingdom poem about enduring love and loss, and the sorrow in between
Morning had settled
over the Kingdom.
It was an ordinary day.
The Queen moved through it
as she always did,
past little reminders of him.
Usually, they made her smile.
But that morning,
her eyes rested on one of his photographs
a little longer.
Something changed,
only slightly at first.
Tears welled in her eyes.
She had not heard Grief come in,
but there it was.
Quietly,
Grief sat down beside her.
It said nothing.
It did not need to explain
why it had come.
“I know,”
the Queen whispered.
Most days, love was simply love,
but Grief had its own sense of time.
It could cross months
in a single step
and bring the pain of losing him
suddenly, heartbreakingly close again.
The Queen opened her arms
and held Grief for a while.
Slowly,
the pain began to soften,
and Grief softened with it.
The love remained,
as it always had,
as it always would.
